App conceptualization

iOS app conceptualization

Are you an entrepreneur with a great idea but don’t know where to start to make it real?

You have an app idea, but you don't have programming or design skills to make it real, and you don't know either the execution steps.

You need to invest in a prototype to show it to investors and get money, so you can make your app a reality.

You want to know how much an app costs, but everyone you ask for a quotation is telling you that you need detailed specs. You cannot have them, because you don't have any professional helping you.

You don't know the associated technical risks. You'll need to do multiple technical experiments but you don't have the skills to do them. You are not up to date with the latest Apple technologies.

I want you to know that these are very common doubts in all the quotations I’m asked to do. As you can imagine, I cannot give an accurate budget without studying your case in depth.

In order to successfully develop an app, it is necessary to have as many specifications as we can. Only this way you’ll get an app design and development team give you an accurate estimate.

The phases to run in a mobile app development project are:

  • 1. Analysis of the functionalities around a wireframe.

  • 2. Design proposal and prototype

  • 3. Design and development

  • 4. Testing

  • 5. Release

1. Analysis of the functionalities around a wireframe.

The functionalities of your app are analyzed one by one, and also the main problem of your target audience. The technical risks are evaluated and studied. All the screens implementing the functionalities are displayed in a canvas (wireframe). We answer the questions: Which screens will my app have?, What information should we add on each screen? How do we navigate from one screen to the next? How the interaction will be? What error messages will be shown?

2. Design proposal and prototype.

We extract the 2 or 3 most representative screens from the previous wireframe, and we provide several design proposals. We answer questions like: What colors the app will have? Which will be the style, the typography? Here we obtain the Look & Feel of the app. Once we have it, we add this design to the original wireframe so that a programmer is able to develop and produce the app. Besides, we generate a clickable mockup or prototype, ideal for showing it to investors, or validate the idea with beta users.

3. Design and development.

Now your idea is in a status in which you can ask for quotations to any development and design team of your choice.

4. Testing.

After the development, and before launching to the Apple app store, it’s important to schedule some testing sessions with a closed beta testing group. This way you can detect and fix any last minute bug.

5. Release.

The release date arrived. You need to have a good app marketing strategy, so you can optimize the searches of your app in the App Store (ASO).

Back to  #1

We shouldn’t forget that a mobile app is a living project and we shouldn’t just forget about it after the first release. Working with an agile methodology is the most recommended in this case.

Before developing your app, you need detailed specs and I want to work hand in hand with you in this process until you get them

In this phase of your project you need a team of experts help you until you can:

Know the project scope

Clarify all the doubts regarding the technologies that better suit your idea

Know the project's technical risks

Know the components of your app (Do I need a custom backend? Or can I use an existing service and save money?)

Know the basic navigation flow of your app

Know how to architecture the information that you'll show your users

Discover which are the interaction techniques that better suit your app

How can I help you?

Together we can put your project into a feasible phase.

I can help you:

Define the scope of your project

Consider the possibilities that Apple offers in order to implement your app

Warn you about the technical risks associated with the project

Set up the code architecture and the project structure so that the programmers that will work on the app will have everything they need in order to develop it

Get a realistic wireframe of your app, so you can develop it with the programmer of your choice, or ask for quotations

Get a final clickable prototype to show your investors

Why do you need this service?

A lot of entrepreneurs like you, that want to release their apps, don’t have the app idea mature enough so they can give me the necessary information in order to make an accurate estimate in our first meeting. Because of that, it’s necessary that somebody drives them during this initial phase until they get a ready-to-implement specification.

You’ll be able to develop your project idea as soon as possible. The initial phases of a project are the ones generating more doubts. It’s necessary to have somebody helping you from the beginning, so that you can start developing your project as soon as possible, allowing your app to be in the market sooner than the competitors.

There are a lot of freelancers out there that will say “YES” to everything, but after signing the contract they cannot implement your idea: because it’s too complex for them, or because it’s technically unfeasible. Thank to these sessions, we will detect the risks and solve the technical doubts very early in the process.

You will save money. Design and technical flaws detected too late generate a high costs. These sessions will help us detecting them very early in the development process, so we can fix them or find alternatives as soon as posible, instead of assuming a multi-month development.

The most useful roles in this consultancy phase are:

The entrepreneur itself or the product owner (you'll be proposing functionalities)

A UI/UX expert (he will be proposing wireframes and specs for the developer)

A native iOS programmer specialist (He will be analyzing the feasibility of the project based on the proposed functionalities and the design proposals)

Sometimes, if a custom backend need is detected, we’ll also need a backend developer specialist.

What I want to tell you with this is that you will be part of the project, and we are going to make you work on it. Are you ready?

RobertoGarrido_500_500

I am Roberto Garrido, iOS Software Engineer for mobile startups

I have participated as Lead iOS developer in projects like RosterBuster, an award winning social network for pilots and cabin crew.

I have worked in more than 20 projects as freelance developer since 2013, helping startups to develop the core of their apps, collaborating in the stabilization and bug fixing in production, and also in continuous integration and delivery tasks.

I’ve been developing software for years. The “turnkey projects” stopped working now some time ago. After months of development, the software requirement change (they always do), and because of that it doesn’t make any sense working in tasks for periods longer than 2 weeks.

You are going to get involved in the product, in the development of the app, and in the business decisions based on the work delivered. I mean, I’m going to make you work in the app, just the same as I will do. Only this way I could help you.

Basic Conceptualization Service

You have a good idea for an app, but when you ask for quotations, everybody tells you that you have to develop your idea further.

With this package you will get a technical analysis of your app, the source code with all the experiments developed in this process, and a complete blueprint showing the information architecture: What information will be shown on each screen? How do we navigate from one screen to the next? Are we using any animations? How will be the interaction like? To summarize, we create your house’s plans and give them to you so you can ask for accurate quotations.

Main advantages: You invest the minimum required in order to study the feasability of the project, and the associated technical risks. Besides, you will have enough information to ask for accurate quotations (both for programming and design).

What does this service include?

1 Free Initial Consultation Session

4 1h Skype sessions to get the functional analysis around a wireframe (navigation flow map)

The Source Code of every experiment and technical tests that I will be doing during the conceptualization

We will be in touch via email as many times as we need during the conceptualization phase

How does this service work?

We schedule the initial consultation session

We schedule the next 4 functional analysis sessions around a wireframe

Before each session, the designer will send a wireframe so you can start analyzing it

During the session: We present you the wireframe. You will validate that the functionalities are covered, and I will try to highlight and pinpoint any technical risk associated with the project, and I will also inform about the implementation costs

After each session: We evolve the wireframe considering the decisions taken in the previous session. I will investigate those interaction techniques proposed by the UX designer and their implementation in the app

You will get a video recording of the session once it's ended

Finally, you'll get a PDF that will contain all the functionality of the app, the navigation flow, and the interactions. Besides, if I do any experiment or technical test in order to validate the feasibility of any functionality, you will get the source code too

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I get from this service?

You’ll get a deliverable that you could use to get quotations from any development and design team of your choice (including me)

I don't know any UI/UX expert. Do you have any recommendations?

Yes, don’t worry. I do know UI/UX professionals that will be more than glad to help you in this initial phase of your project.

How often will we meet?

Ideally once per week, so we have enough time to work on each iteration.

Is the UI/UX specialist service included in the price?

Yes. But please, remember that this is a starting price.

How is the payment done?

The payment is 100% upfront. After our free initial consultation session, and only if we see that there is feeling between us and I feel I can help you, I’ll give you the payment details.

I don't understand very well what's a wireframe

It’s an schema of your app. Within this schema we can see the information to be shown on each screen, the navigation between them, the user interactions, the animations, etc. It’s very common that the first iterations give a simple sketch as output, but the closer we get to the final session, the more detailed version we will get. You can see multiple examples here.
